With the release of heavily redacted and blacked out documents this week from the CIA many in the main stream press are calling it a torrent of revelations from the clandestine agency. This is such a misrepresentation it isn't funny. Either due to ignorance or purposeful misleading, much of what was released had already been known since the seventies. The bulk of what was released had already been detailed in not one but two major intelligence investigations in the 1970's. You can find a complete annotated guide to these investigations here: http://www.jcarpentermusic.com/files/Govern2.doc.
It first it was hard to understand why these documents were released at this time. Upon further consideration I realized that this so called house cleaning in combination with George Tenet's book and public revelations the CIA is trying to turn the tide of negative public opinion about the agency. Will this work? Possibly, but don't count on it. With serious allegations of rendition flights and secret prisons, who cares that they opened people's mail and tried to get Castro killed. The juiciest of all the programs that consists the least of the released documents is MKULTRA, possibly the most sadistic and evil program run by the CIA or any government agency in the history of this country.
For those that know nothing about the secret history of the CIA and the extent of what they could have disclosed, this current release constitutes a red herring, not the "family jewels." (For further information read Joe Trento's books on the CIA, The Secret history of the CIA, and Prelude to Terror.) The term "Family Jewels" is a loaded one, one which was said to be used by James Jesus Angleton in referring specifically to the counterintelligence operations of the CIA which probably included the assassinations of JFK and RFK. These are the true "jewels" and not a word about either case, hmm…interesting. Even with all the release of Castro related documents not even a peep about the involvement of Kennedy, accept slight reference to Bobby Kennedy's involvement in Operation Mongoose, most likely a purposeful release to further besmirch his name.
In the end the release constitutes nothing new, as well as giving the appearance that the CIA has come clean. It's a load of malarkey plain and simple and if you want to know about what they didn't choose to release check my bibliography on the government investigations of the 1970's. There you will see what they choose to leave out. Check my references and read the reports or due some clever, critical, and honest web sleuthing. Don't be swayed by sanitized red herring releases of documents from inside the CIA itself. The proof is in the pudding.
